Taunton Rowing Club was founded in 2012.
The club was founded by Ian Payne almost 10 years ago starting with only a few borrowed boats and a trailer at the Old Market Site. Before he moved away, he was the main driving force to expand the club and move to our current location.
Located at COACH in French Wier, we row on the River Tone. Boating down from French Weir, we row on the 700m stretch from Tangier down to Firepool Lock.
The club has a wide range of boats suited to all levels from complete beginners to national and international competitors. These include: singles, doubles, a pair, an adaptive double, a coxed and an uncoxed quad and two coxed fours.
Despite the limitations of the river, it is a great place to learn to row and train.
Exciting news ahead for Taunton Rowing Club!
In 2018 the club moved into a new boathouse in French Weir Park, close to Longrun Meadow, thanks to the unstinting efforts of Ian Payne and his fellow Trustees. C.O.A.C.H, Centre for Outdoor Activities Community Hub, operates a facility that is used by other local clubs for kayaking, orienteering, canoeing and open water swimming. As well as having a gym and large function/indoor activities room, there are changing rooms with showers and a café.
We are a small club, but one with a growing membership. Our members regularly compete at local and national levels and have won many events against competitors from much larger clubs. We welcome new members of all abilities and ages. Our minimum age is currently 14. We have an experienced and diverse coaching team ready to offer their skills and support to help you achieve your rowing or coxing goals. Club sessions run regularly on Tuesday early morning, Thursday evenings and Saturday and Sunday morning.
