In total eleven members of Taunton Rowing Club competed over the three
days of the bank holiday weekend in the Gloucester and Ross Regattas
winning several heat and three finals.
Saturday saw two of our promising junior women, Lucy Morton and Joely
Dearman, racing in both single sculling boats and later together as a double.
They were unlucky to miss a first round when their opponents scratched
meaning they both went straight to semi-finals where they were beaten by
stronger opponents. Senior members competed in single (Gill Hawkey and
David Walden) and double sculling boats (Gill and Sophie Puzey, Steve Swan
and David). Gill and Sophie lost in a very close race against a crew Dart
Totnes who went on to win the final. Steve and David won their doubles semi-
final overhauling a crew that was given a 4 second starting handicap but could
not repeat this in the final. Tom Enright rowing in the 18 years old category of
the juniors lost in a close finish to a sculler from Cardiff and Vale RC.
On Sunday, Amy Hallett won the Women’s Elite singles final. Later, she
teamed up with Verity Stone to race in a double. This was there first time
together with a close loss despite a very strong row.
On Monday, Amy travelled to Ross-on- Wye, where she won two single
sculling races: a heat of the Women’s Senior and the final of the Open Senior
single. This event was open to both female and male entries which makes her
win even more impressive as it was against a male sculler and the
culmination of a very successful weekend for her and the club.
